TEFA helps, our essence remains

Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) is a new statewide program that allows eligible Texas families to use public education funds for alternatives to traditional public schools, such as private schools, approved pre-K/kindergarten programs, homeschooling, tutoring, and other educational services.

Eligibility:
Children must live in Texas, be U.S. citizens or legally admitted residents, be eligible to attend a Texas public school (or public pre-K/kindergarten), and have a parent or legal guardian who lives in Texas. Once accepted, students typically remain eligible without reapplying each year as long as they meet program requirements.

Funding:
Students attending approved private schools may receive approximately $10,400 per year. Final funding amounts for the 2026–27 school year will be confirmed in January 2026. Unused funds can roll over from year to year.

Approved Uses:
Funds can be used for private school tuition and fees, textbooks and materials, uniforms, tutoring, educational therapies, transportation, limited computer purchases, and some school-provided meals.

Application & Timing:
The first application window is expected to open February 4, 2026. Funds will be distributed through a digital wallet system and used through an approved online marketplace.

Important Considerations:
Acceptance is not guaranteed if demand exceeds available funds. Private schools must opt in and meet state requirements. Funds may only be used for approved expenses, and families must follow program rules.

For El Paso Families:
Eligible families in El Paso can apply like all Texas families. Parents should confirm whether their chosen private school plans to participate in TEFA.

Accepting TEFA funds does not change our admissions process.

  • All current and future families continue to go through our standard admissions process.
  • Mountain West Montessori remains a private Montessori school, rooted in clear values and intentional community building.
  • Accepting TEFA does not mean we are becoming a public school, nor does it change how we thoughtfully enroll and support families.
